Writing Process: One Size Does Not Fit All

Developing an individual writing process is a key part of becoming a real writer. If you want to learn and grow as a writer then you must work to develop a unique writing process. Research strategy is a plan of action that gives direction to your efforts, enabling you to conduct research systematically rather than haphazardly. The topic that is selected has adequate exposure. Main idea or point of view about the topic is clearly expressed.

When you are deciding which sources to check with do keep certain things in mind. Determine your set of audience. They should be informed audience and not the general public. Collect the sources that are written by experts and presented objectively. See to it that the source is comprehensive and objective rather than superficial or biased. Do evaluation on the information that it is balanced, accurate and fair. Do check that the writer’s view point is clear and objective. Differing points of view are accredited. Consistent, accurate documentation is critical to good research. Try to document your sources. There are different documentation styles, but choose a specific style like MLA or APA. In MLA documentation style the works cited section is compulsory. Textual citations should also be there in the research paper. Footnotes and endnotes are citations which appear in the text.

Just check that the sentences have proper punctuations and written in a proper style. Just check that the paragraphs follow each other. In each paragraph sentences follow each other. Just see to it that the paper has a good introduction, and that the conclusion is logical. Every writer needs some help with their writing. Every writer can improve their writing. One simple technique you can use to improve your writing and better develop your writing process is to spend less time writing and more time thinking about your writing.

Many writers struggle with their early drafts simply because they have not allowed an idea enough time to simmer. Giving yourself time to brainstorm, sift and sort through ideas, and to both have and build upon creative inspirations is one of the keys to becoming a successful and productive writer.

It is important once you are set on a specific project that you focus your thoughts on that goal. If you are writing something short then focus first on the introduction, for example. If you are writing a novel or book then focus on one scene or section of a chapter. Create a movie in your head, and because it is your movie, do not overlook the sounds, smells, and textures that go along with it dissertation editing. Put yourself in the shoes of the characters of your movie so you can identify with them and feel their emotions. Play with words and sentences in your head. Get a feel for the rhythm of the language. Does it match the "movie" you created?

The more you work these elements over in your head then the easier it will be when you sit back down to write. Use your head to make writing easier for you and more effective as well.

5 Reasons You Need Your Academic Dissertation Proofread

You’re probably at the point now where you are finishing and finalizing your work. You’ve done the research, toiled over your subject and thought many times why you were actually writing this massive piece for your university degree. When I was writing mine I just wanted to give up, it seemed like I had trees and trees of journal articles that I had to get through and really couldn’t remember what I had read and where. I had lots of other internet material too, as well as books and transcripts of my own research I had carried out. Getting to this point seemed so far away in the beginning and I know that it took so much energy to complete.

Finally, the writing, typing and reading is over and I bet you are truly exhausted from the whole ordeal – and if you’re not then you need to look and see if you actually worked hard enough on the sources, late nights and reading material. Dissertation Writing: Make Good Use Of Your Free Time!

Do you have trouble taking advantage of unstructured time? Do you plan on getting lots of writing a literature review done, then realize you've done nothing? Here are some hints for not wasting that time. If you'd like to see the humorous "what not to do" article, see my newsletter in the archives, for March 23, 2005.

I wrote an article in my newsletter on ways to waste unstructured time that you had intended to spend on writing. With Spring Break and summer ahead of you, it’s worth thinking about how you can get the most done with the least time wasted, in order to have more time for play. Here are some suggestions, which constitute my ten time-wasting rules in reverse.


1. Plan ahead. Whether it’s the night or the week before, get very clear what you are going to work on. Be quite specific, particularly with what you are going to do first. If possible, lay out all the materials you’ll need ahead of time, and write a few notes on what you should start with.

2. Make a schedule ahead of time, and write it down. What time do you plan to write and for how long? Consider this schedule inviolate.

3. Often people make the mistake of starting at the beginning. If you’re not sure how the beginning will go, start in the middle. Start with what you’re the most comfortable starting with! That may be bad grammar, but you get my point. Don’t start with the most difficult part, or you might not start at all. If you have some good thoughts, get them down now.

4. Use activities that you do frequently as a reward. Email is an example of this. What this means is that you do your scheduled writing, THEN you get to check your email. Don’t do the fun thing first.

5. The same goes for computer games.

6. When you’ve written a paragraph and then reread it and think it’s terrible, do not delete it right away. It might not be as bad as you think. Change it to a different color or put big parentheses around it, but do not delete it. There may be some salvageable thoughts that you can use later. Keep writing and look at it again in your next writing session.

7. Do not edit as you go. Allow bad grammar and incomplete thoughts. It will be much easier to edit at a later time.

8. If you miss a day, don’t punish yourself by trying to do double the next day. You will be more likely to avoid writing. You know your own tendencies – if you do best writing for 30 minutes, only schedule 30 minutes for writing.

9. Don’t give up on writing just because it’s uncomfortable or hard. Loosen yourself up a little bit, do some free writing. See other articles on my website for ways to start writing more easily. Don't Waste Your Summer: Write Your Dissertation And Have Fun, Too

Avoid another summer of getting little done on your dissertation while you barely enjoy your free time. Follow these steps for a productive, fun-filled summer. I originally wrote this article for the All-But-Dissertation Survival Guide, for the May 19, 2005 issue.

It's a universal belief. Free time = get more accomplished. Too bad it's not always true. What are the reasons that free time doesn't necessarily lead to productivity?

Let's look at it step by step. Here is a typical scenario - OK, maybe it's slightly exaggerated.


Day 1. You sit down in front of the computer. You think about how much writing you need to do. It's almost overwhelming. So you check your email. A friend calls, and you meet him for lunch. Soon the day is shot. It doesn't matter; there's a whole summer ahead.

Day 2-30. Repeat versions of Day 1.

Day 31. You have begun to be nervous. A month has passed and you've barely gotten anything done. You resolve to put in at least 4 solid hours of writing a day. Starting tomorrow.

Day 32. Just thinking about those 4 hours of writing makes you ill. You end up playing solitaire on the computer, cleaning your closet, and hating yourself.

Day 33. Someone asks you how the what is a dissertation is going, and you realize you want to punch them. Why do people keep asking you that? Are they trying to torture you?

You no longer feel as carefree and optimistic about finishing. The burden of getting something done feels so pressing that it causes you to procrastinate further. Your procrastination lowers your self-esteem. " After all," says your completely logical mind, "with all this time available, I really should have gotten substantial work done."

Before you find yourself in this nightmarish scenario, here are some tips that will not only help you make better use of your time, but allow you to enjoy your free time without guilt.


1. Even before the free time arrives, make a list of the big projects you want to accomplish during this period, and then break them into smaller tasks.

2. Continue to let this list percolate. Make notes at odd moments while you're still busy. Always keep a little notebook or even just an index card with you so that you can develop the list and other thoughts whenever something comes into your mind. Some of our best thinking occurs at unplanned times.

3. Select what you will work on the first week. Don't set unrealistically high goals for yourself -- this only results in discouragement. Contrary to logic, taking the excessive internal pressure off tends to allow you to accomplish more.

4. The day before, write down what you will start with the next day. It's always easier to plan what you will work on before you sit down to do it.

5. Schedule your work periods in small blocks of time; as short as 15 minutes may be needed to get you started. If you feel very stuck, read the article I wrote for the December issue of the ABD Survival Guide on getting back to work.

6. Write every day. Spend at least 10 minutes per day just writing. If you are in the very initial stages of an idea, do some free writing. If you are at the editing stage, edit for at least 10 minutes every day. There is nothing more important than this writing habit in keeping you feeling fresh and on top of your work.

7. At the end of each work period, make a note as to what you will do when you start up the next time.

8. Use your favorite activities as rewards. If looking at email relaxes you, promise yourself you can look at it for 20 minutes after you have worked for 40.

If you miss a day or two, don't be hard on yourself, and don't decide to do extra work. This negative message will lead to more procrastination. Just start where you left off.

Finally, schedule your fun time and fully enjoy it. Feeling guilty never helped anyone write a better dissertation!

How To Write A Proper Term Paper

There is some confusion between a term paper and a research paper. While the titles are often interchanged, there is a difference. A research paper is always an academic research study and may take several years to complete if it is being written as part of the requirements of a degree.

The term paper is limited to the length of time a school term or semester takes and is used to determine the final grade of a particular class. Th term paper, while quite often of an academic research form, does not have to be so scholarly. A term paper may serve to prove a matter of opinion or an attempt at proving an hypothesis.

The requirements for writing a dissertation doctoral term paper are very similar to those of a research paper. One difference is that the topic of a term paper is often assigned to the student or they are given only a limited number of choices for their subject. Term paper writing is not as extensive as research papers. With less time for completion, the term paper will generally be a shorter work. However, your term paper still requires the same attention to detail and maintaining of source material and referencing techniques as the more scholarly research paper.


Begin your term paper dissertation writing with study. Once you have your topic it is recommended you first find out about the basic principles underlying your subject. This will help give you a general idea of what your topic is about and can provide ideas for how to direct your own term paper. Remember to keep notes and reference lists. A general encyclopedia is good for your initial research. From there you will be able to focus on writings from people mentioned and access the bibliography section to find more source materials you can utilize.

Internet resources are also handy for finding out about your topic. Do not stop at just one, however, as there is probably more misinformation online than not. Compare several sources to determine which seem most genuine.

Once you have begun the process of physically writing your term paper, start with a general outline detailing what information you are presenting and figure out the order in which you present each new section of information. Stick to proper grammar and writing patterns. Avoid colloquialisms except in necessary instances where they may apply. Prevent yourself from emotional diatribes. Your term paper should explain the topic, not try to argue it.

Check with the person who assigned you the term paper for the proper format. There are a number of styles and it is essential you are footnoting, indenting and spacing the way your grader wants it done. While the inexperienced may wonder why this is so important, it is a double test of your ability to not only find the needed material and present it in a comprehensible form, you must show that you can follow detailed instructions as well.

Once you have done your first draft, set it aside for a few days or a week and then come back to begin the proofreading stage. As well as searching for grammar errors and misspellings, you should review the words you use and delete superfluous, unnecessary words. Review adjectives and keep them to a minimum. Avoid first person narrative in your term paper.

As a final check, be sure to go over all your footnotes and references to make sure they are properly accredited and included in the correct form. It is a myth that no one will check. Being found out to have plagiarized or made up your references will end up disqualifying your entire work.

Methods Of Writing An Essay

Over the course of your studies, whether in high school or college, you will be required to write a multitude of essays on a wide range of topics dissertation literature review. Therefore, it is imperative to your success that you can write superb and engaging essays, as without this skill, it is difficult to even pass a class. Constructing an essay is not as intimidating as it first appears, as long as you recognize the steps of writing and take in to account some helpful tips.

Transitioning from high school to college can be a tough experience, as the general requirements for essays become harder. Also, professors often do not alert you to the new requirements, as they expect you to already know them. Sometimes the only way to become familiar with a different grading style is to write an essay normally and then read whatever comments are put on to it after it is graded. In this manner, you can adapt fairly quickly to a fresh environment and be as successful as you were in high school.


The major focus of a college essay is on analysis and critical thinking. High school essays usually require that you just demonstrate a basic understanding of the subject by simply reporting information. Once you have finished the plan, start writing a dissertation right away. It is easy to make a plan and then wait a few more days to actually start, so try hard to avoid this.

Establish a clear direction and focus early on in the essay. A written work that jumps around and does not stay on one topic is usually not regarded well, and a lack of focus influences other parts of the essay. If you have already developed a plan, then staying relevant should not be difficult at all.

To be able to write an essay, you must also be able to read essays. Digesting other writers essays that are of a similar topic to yours can give you new ideas and improve your general writing skills. There are plenty of essays available online, so there is no shortage of reading material. Take time to analyze each essay, as totally understanding one essay is better than having a slight comprehension of ten.

Once the essay is completed, it cannot be stressed enough to have it proofread, preferably multiple times. Reading it over yourself is good, but to get the most useful feedback, it is necessary to have someone else proofread your essay as well. Not only can they spot spelling and grammatical errors that may have evaded you, but they can also give you ideas on restructuring the format or adding/deleting a passage.
